Less screen time, more outdoor play: how to get children outside again

Many children today spend too much time in front of a screen. On average, it quickly reaches 100 minutes of screen time per day or more. This not only affects their sleep and concentration but also their movement, creativity, and overall health.

Even more importantly: children play outside less as a result, while outdoor play is essential for their development. Outside, they get to know their bodies better, build self-confidence, discover risks, and develop motor skills such as balance, steering, and coordination.

But how do you really get your child away from that screen?

Make clear and achievable screen time agreements

Children need structure. Without clear boundaries, screen time can quickly increase.

Therefore, make simple agreements, for example:

  • Screen time only after school or outdoor play
  • A fixed time limit per day
  • No screens during meals

It is important to be consistent. This naturally creates space for other activities.

Plan a fixed outdoor playtime every day

Waiting for your child to go outside and play on their own often doesn’t work. Make it a habit.

It can be very simple:

  • Walking or biking together
  • A daily playtime in the garden
  • A quick visit to the nearby playground
  • A short “outdoor break” after school

Consistency is key here. The more normal playing outside becomes, the less appealing screens will be.

Care for attractive outdoor toys

Children go outside more quickly when it’s really fun. That’s why good outdoor toys play a big role.

At Vrooomy, we believe that playing outside should be not only about movement but also about adventure. That’s why we have a wide range that activates and challenges children.

With our electric ride-on cars and buggies, children experience imaginative play fun in the garden, while parents always keep control thanks to the remote control. The ride-on quads are ideal for little adventurers who like to ride outside on grass, gravel, or garden paths and safely explore their surroundings.

Our balance bikes help children naturally build balance, steering, and confidence, often as a first step toward independent cycling. Scooters provide extra movement and help improve coordination and balance.

👉 All these Vrooomy products stimulate important motor skills such as steering, stopping, and maintaining balance. This way, children learn to ride and move through play, while mainly doing one thing: playing outside more and with joy.

Make playing outside more fun than screen time

Children mainly choose what feels the most fun, so the more appealing you make it, the faster they’ll go outside instead of reaching for a screen. So don’t make playing outside a “mandatory activity,” but a real adventure they can get lost in.

  • Organize small “missions” in the garden, like a treasure hunt, delivery game, or adventure course
  • Let children choose their own vehicle (quad, car, scooter, or balance bike) so they really feel involved
  • Join in the play yourself when you can — kids love it when parents step into their world
  • Turn it into a challenge with small races, obstacles, or tasks they can complete

This way, playing outside becomes something children look forward to spontaneously, instead of something they “have to” do.
